How to read the Two Shores artwork

The Two Shores artwork reads from left to right. The left edge of the frame is the beginning of the moment, the right edge is its end: every heartbeat takes its place along this line of time.

Each smart ring draws its own band: one band per person, one above the other, separated by white space. Each person finds their whole heart in their band, from the first beat to the last.

Every beat draws a vertical line. The height of the line is the strength of the beat, above and below the person’s resting line: a strong beat rises and falls further than a quiet one.

What the colour does

The colour follows the rhythm of each heart: the slow tint appears when the heart slows below its resting rhythm, the fast tint when it speeds up.

The balance of colours is decided by your hearts alone: two people living the same moment can give bands in very different colours.

What one vertical line shows

The bands share a single clock, starting at the shared beginning of the moment, and the same time scale. A vertical line drawn through the bands falls on the same instant for each person.

So you compare your two hearts instant by instant: where your bands change colour at the same place, your two hearts sped up or slowed down at the same instant; where only one band changes, only one of the two hearts reacted.

This detail reads on the print, on paper, as you step closer to the artwork.

Who Two Shores is for

For two people who each want to see their own heart, in the same frame: one band per person, on the same line of time.

Years later, each person finds their own trace in the artwork, whole and apart from the other’s.

Fine-art paper, landscape format, in two formats named after their frame: 14 × 11 in and 24 × 18 in. The landscape frame holds your bands, one above the other.
