Us

Your moment, cut into equal slices of time and set in columns side by side: one set of columns per person.

Us · artwork render: one set of vertical columns per person, in equal stretches of time

The artwork

Each artwork is made of the moments recorded by the ring.

  • The artwork’s shape comes from the heartbeats recorded during the moment.
  • This artwork exists in a single tint: the tint you see here.

How to read the Us artwork

Each column holds the same length of time as its neighbour. The columns read left to right, and the last column is the end of the moment.

The first smart ring gives the first set of columns, the second smart ring gives the second set. The two sets of columns sit side by side at the same height: the same minute appears twice inside the frame, once for each person.

In the Two Shores series, Us is the artwork where two heart rhythms compare fastest. A dense column next to an open column at the same instant: the difference between your two hearts shows at first glance.

Equal slices of time

The Us artwork cuts time into identical parts to compare your two hearts. Every column lasts as long as its neighbour: the difference from one column to the next comes only from the heartbeats recorded in each column.

In the grid of equal columns, a denser or wider drawing shows the rhythm of the heart, over an equal length of time.

The length of each column is set so that a change of rhythm shows whole within one column and each variation of the heart stays visible.

What the duration gave

The length of your moment gives the number of columns. The number of columns sets the width of each column, and the width of each column sets how fine the drawing is.

A shorter moment gives fewer, wider columns, and a looser drawing in each column. A longer moment gives more, finer columns, and a tighter drawing.

Who Us is for

For two people who want to compare their two hearts. The Us artwork sets your two rhythms face to face, minute by minute, and shows the gap between you.

Us is also the easiest artwork to read in the Two Shores series: the grid of columns is understood at first glance, then each column reads in detail.

The Us artwork is also looked at with other people: you point at a column, compare one column with its neighbour, and the conversation starts.

The print

Fine-art paper, signed pigment print, portrait format. The columns stand upright in the frame and read left to right.

The artwork arrives framed, ready to hang, with its numbered certificate. One more copy can be ordered with the artwork.

The artwork leaves the studio about two weeks after your moment ends.

The Us artwork belongs to the Two Shores series and cuts time into equal slices, set side by side.

Each artwork is composed from the unique variations of your heart.

The trace comes from your moment: it exists only once.

Frequently asked

What does one column hold?
One slice of time from the moment. A person's columns cover the whole moment, and the neighbouring set of columns covers the same minutes for the other person.
How does Us differ from Two Shores?
Both artworks show the same moment, set out in two ways. Two Shores sets one band per person, one above the other, time running left to right; Us cuts time into equal slices, set in columns.
Can this artwork be ordered?
Yes. The Us artwork is ordered from two people up, in either format — 11 × 14 in and 18 × 24 in. The columns are set from the length of your moment: an evening fills fewer columns than a night.
